6 Traits of the Frugal Shopper
Certain personalities are better at frugal shopping than others. But if you know what traits the best frugal shoppers all share, you can learn those skills for yourself. Remember: frugal can be fun!
- Frugal shoppers understand value versus false economy. For example, if the cheapest item seems likely to break easily, that’s not real savings.
- Frugal shoppers usually pay cash. If they use the credit card (which is great when you’re spending more than you want to carry around in cash), they pay it off immediately. Frugal shoppers avoid debt like the plague.
- Frugal shoppers consider every option. If they’ve established that Item A is cheapest at Store B, that’s great. But they also consider whether Items B, C or D might do just as well for their needs.
- Frugal shoppers compare notes with others. They like to talk about bargains they’ve gotten, and this gets other people to give them tips about their bargains. Always encourage people to brag about good deals they’ve gotten – you never know what you might learn.
- Frugal shoppers are skeptical of sales pitches. They look for confirmation of what they’re being told instead of just accepting it at face value.
- Frugal shoppers aren’t afraid to haggle over pricier items. Frugal shoppers aren’t shy about telling sales clerks, “Hmm, I saw it cheaper at [other store]” or “I’m just not sure it’s worth that much.” Often, you’ll get a reduced price that way.
