Save money with online grocery shopping

959020_vegetablesBuying groceries online can actually help you save money as well as time. The first and most obvious way is that you don’t pay for gas or bus fare to get to the store and back. If you buy a certain minimum amount, most stores don’t charge for delivery, either.

Another way it saves you money is by reducing the desire to buy items you don’t need on impulse. Grocery stores are designed to force you to walk all over the store to get what you need, in the hope that while you’re doing that, you’ll be tempted to buy items you don’t need. It’s much easier to stick strictly to your grocery list when you’re on a computer.

Most grocery websites show a running total for your purchase as you add items to your “cart” or “shopping bag.” If yours doesn’t, you can still check your cart every now and then to see how much you’ve spent. That should help you curb excessive spending, whereas at a grocery store you don’t realize how much you’ve spent until you get to the checkout line (unless you’re dedicated enough to keep a running total on a calculator as you shop, which most of us are not).

One of the best ways you can save when ordering groceries online is that if what you wanted to buy isn’t available, you can check your pantry before deciding what to get instead. For example, you should shop with a list of ingredients that gives you what you need to make the meals you’ve planned for this week. But what if the store is unexpectedly out of an item that’s essential to one of those meals, and suddenly you have to come up with a different meal for Thursday? At the store, you’d have to try to remember what you have at home, or just buy everything you need for the replacement meal in order to make sure you have everything. At home, you can just go look in your kitchen, get an idea for a replacement meal, and be sure to buy only what you don’t already have.
