Are Newsletters Legitimate Sources For Shopping Online?
I’ve been asked in the past if website newsletters are legitimate sources for shopping online and if they can be trusted.
There’s isn’t a yes or no answer to this question. Like any shopping medium, there are good ones and bad ones. There are ways to gauge the legitamcy of a newsletter provider.
The following are elements that every newsletter should incorporate:
1) Following CanSpam regulations - These are legal requirements that should be followed when distributing a newsletter. These rules try to eliminate spamming of people’s email accounts.
A) Double Opt-in sign-up - All legitimate newsletters should provide for a double opt-in process where the individual not only signs up for the newsletter but must verify the sign-up via a verification link that is sent to their email. This allows for a protective measure of only receiving newsletters that you want.
B) Provide contact information - All newsletters should include a physical address, contact name, phone number and email address. This helps to provide some legitimacy to the newsletter.
C) Opt-out procedure - Newsletters should provide a link in every newsletter mailing that gives the recipient the ability to stop receiving future emailings.
2) Content - All newsletters should provide the information they promised. As an example, my newsletter distributes coupons on a monthly basis. My newsletter should provide coupons and not some other information that wasn’t requested. If you sign-up for a newsletter and start receiving information that you didn’t sign-up for, then be leary of the type of emails that you will receive in the future.
3) Useful Information - This relates to content. Once you start receiving newsletters, you should be able to determine if the content that is provided in the email is useful to you or just an attempt at shellshocking you with useless information.
Many newsletters are legitimate and excellent sources of information. Just make sure that your newsletter provider is following ethical standards and not spamming you.
