5 Frugal Gardening Tips

There are lots of ways to save money on gardening. In fact, because gardening is all about reusing and recycling, it can actually be one of the cheapest hobbies/chores you’ll have. The more you know about it, the more you can save. Here are five tips to get you started saving.

  1. For vegetables and grass, a light daily sprinkling can do less good than a good soaking with the water hose about 3 times a week. The hose can use far less water, saving you money on your water bill.
  2. Used coffee grounds make organic fertilizer, providing a number of  trace minerals and a steady supply of nitrogen, phosphorous and potassium.
  3. Get cuttings from people you know instead of always buying new plants. You can plant the cuttings and grow them yourself.
  4. Marigolds attract “friendly” insects – the type that eat aphids and other pests before they can eat your garden. Plant marigolds amidst your vegetables to get that benefit. Cheaper and more environmentally safe than pesticides – and it also saves you money by protecting those veggies so they’re still edible by the time they’re ripe.
  5. Grass clippings can be placed around vegetables to act as mulch, keeping the moisture in and preventing weed growth. Ditto with pine needles.
