5 Tips for Planning a Day Spa Staycation

More and more people are discovering the value of a “staycation”. By finding fun things to do within an affordable driving distance, you can get the refreshment of a vacation without the travel expenses. If you plan it right, visiting a day spa with some friends can be every bit as fun, memorable and relaxing as a trip to a beach.

How to plan a day spa trip

So how do you plan a wonderful day spa trip? What do you need to know, especially if you’ve never visited one before?

  1. Check out all of them before choosing. Chances are, there are at least a couple of day spas within a reasonable driving distance from where you live. Don’t just pick one that’s been recommended to you, or choose the first one you hear about. Do some research and find out what’s available.
  2. Confirm the guest list. Knowing the exact total of people in your party will help you secure better package deals. Make sure everyone you’ve invited understands they must confirm by a certain date because the spa will charge a cancellation fee if anyone simply doesn’t show up. You could end up having to pay that fee.
  3. Research their package deals. Find out what services each spa in your area offers, how much the services cost, and what package deals they offer. Be aware that some salons double as day spas, so you may have even more options than you realize. Salon spas tend to offer more services – makeup, hair cuts, massages, laser hair removal, facials and all sorts of neat stuff. You may want to make a simple spreadsheet listing the services available at each place, and the prices, to get an idea where you and your friends will get the most for your money.
  4. Atmosphere. If possible, visit the spa in advance to make sure the atmosphere is relaxing. No matter how many services a salon offers, for example, if the massages take place in a tiny, ugly back room with people yelling back and forth over hair driers, it’s probably not the relaxing choice. If visiting in advance is unfeasible, note the attitudes of the people you talk to over the phone. Do they sound genuinely happy and relaxed? Or snobby and uptight? Or hassled? The staff’s mood usually reflects the spa’s mood. They should make you feel more relaxed.
  5. Book in advance. You need to book your party a couple of weeks in advance, as spas can’t just throw everything together at a moment’s notice. Well, not in a relaxing way, anyway.

Have fun!
